Welcome to the June 2025 IWII newsletter! We have several updates:

 

The IWII Wound and Skin Cleansing Consensus Document 2025 has been released!

 

The IWII Therapeutic wound and skin cleansing: Clinical evidence and recommendations is now available online! This document reviews:

    • Intro of wound cleansing in practice
    • Recommendations on cleansing of the wound bed, wound edge, periwound skin and surrounding skin
    • The wound dressing change procedure
    • Selection of wound and skin cleansing solutions and wound cleansing techniques
    • Pain management during wound cleansing
    • Antimicrobial stewardship related to wound cleansing
    • And much more…

    A useful glossary of terms is also included as is a review of our methodology when developing the guideline. Many thanks to Emily Haesler, who spearheaded this project and the IWII development team for developing this document.

    IWII WOUND INFECTION IN CLINICAL PRACTICE: Principles of best practice (2022)

    This fall, we will begin the process of updating this document for the 4th time. Look out for the release of the updated publication in 2026.

    New IWII Board Members

    We are happy to welcome four new IWII board members:

     

    Leanne Atkin PhD, MHSc, RGN is a Lecturer Practitioner at the University of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England and a Vascular Nurse Consultant at Mid Yorks NHS Trust. Her interests include leg ulcer management, advancing nursing practice, peripheral arterial disease and advanced wound management. She oversees an active research portfolio as a Chief Investigator within the wider NHS and also acts as a Principal Investigator for a number of studies.

     

    Daniel Gibson, PhD is a scientist focused on both basic research and product development in the area of tissue biology and tissue response to injury. He spent 9 years at the University of Florida working with Greg Schultz, PhD, first as a Postdoc and then as a Research Assistant Professor. He is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the College of Engineering and an Assistant Professor at Capstone College of Nursing, both at the University of Alabama, USA.

     

    Lisa Gould, MD, PhD is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and a researcher at South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth, Massachusetts, USA. She is a member of the Wound Team there, specializing in the care of patients with difficult wounds. She is also an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at University of South Florida and Clinical Associate Professor at Warren Alpert Medical school of Brown University and Tufts University Medical School.

     

    Prashini Moodley MBChB, MMed, PhD is a pathologist with over 25 years of experience working in medical microbiology, management of infections, research, teaching, and control of infectious diseases. She is currently a clinical microbiologist/pathologist and business partner, Pathcare Diagnostic Laboratories, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and Honorary Professor Infectious Diseases, School of Laboratory Medicine and Medical Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal.

    Reminder to View our 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM)

    The IWII AGM was held on the 5th of December, 2024. Highlights included a membership update by Terry Swanson, our Chair, and the following presentations by members of the Board
